Marshall women fall to Kent St. in tournament opener
HUNTINGTON -- Kent State posted a 3-2 victory over Marshall in a Friday game of the Marshall Holiday Inn-vitational softball tournament at Dot Hicks Field.
Kent State also won the opening game against Delaware, 8-5.
Marshall (10-5) attempts to get back on track in Saturday games against Delaware and Cleveland State.
"We look forward to the rest of the weekend and us coming out with a little more intensity and picking up things on the offensive side," Marshall coach Shonda Stanton said.
KSU (2-9) struck first, scoring in the third inning when Rachel Wilson crossed the plate on a Marshall error.
Marshall responded in the fifth inning when Ashley Gue scored on a wild pitch. The Thundering Herd's Melanie Stoehr scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning for a 2-1 lead.
Heather Duhon of the Golden Flashes answered in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run home run.
Marshall starting pitcher Katie Murphree had eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Kent State pitcher Kylie Reynolds pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts. Mary Holt of the Golden Flashes had two hits.
