Herd tops Eastern Ky. in Chillicothe
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Alfredo Brito and Gray Stafford both had three hits for Marshall University in a 7-4 baseball victory Wednesday against Eastern Kentucky at V.A. Memorial Stadium.
Brito was 3-for-5 with a double and one run batted in. Stafford was 3-for-4, also doubled, and drove in a pair of runs.
Marshall starting pitcher Alex Thackston (1-3) was the winner after throwing 5.2 innings. Thackston gave up two runs and struck out a pair while conceding five hits and a walk.
Brito put the Thundering Herd on top early when he doubled and scored in the bottom of the second inning. Marshall (18-26) added another run that inning when Sergio Leon launched a two-out double to right-center field, scoring Aaron Bossi.
Eastern Kentucky (15-27) answered with a run in the third, but Marshall broke the game open with a run in the third and three more in the fourth. Stafford doubled in two runs in the fourth. Brito singled in one more three batters later.
The Colonels rallied for runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the Marshall bullpen held on.
Herd relief pitcher Josh King pitched the ninth inning and picked up his fifth save of the season.
Eastern Kentucky starter Matt Lynch (0-5) suffered the loss, giving up three (earned) runs on five hits and three walks over three innings.
Marshall goes to Memphis for a Conference USA weekend series with the Tigers beginning Friday night.
