May 09, 2008 @ 07:20 PM

HUNTINGTON — Another piece of the Florida Gators could be coming to Marshall.

Men’s basketball player Jonathan Mitchell, a 6-foot-7 forward who decided to transfer after two seasons at Florida, visited the Marshall campus Friday. Mitchell previously made visits to Rutgers and Seton Hall.

As an NCAA Division I transfer he would sit out the 2008-09 season and have two years left to play.

Marshall head coach Donnie Jones was on the Florida staff for 13 seasons, including 2006-07 when the Gators won the national championship and Mitchell was a freshman. Marshall transfer Brandon Powell, who is eligible next season, was also with the Gators in 2007.

Mitchell played in 35 games last season when Florida was 24-12 and advanced to the NIT semifinals. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.8 rebounds in 11.4 minutes per game. His best scoring performances were against Stetson (10), Temple (15) and High Point (12). He had eight points and three steals against Creighton in the NIT second round.

He made his only start against Auburn and played 16 minutes with four points and two rebounds.

The 231-pound Mitchell from Mount Vernon, N.Y., was named to the Southeastern Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll.

As a freshman for the Gators he played 6.2 minutes a game, averaging 1.4 points and 1.2 rebounds.

Mitchell was a high school Mr. Basketball award winner in New York. He led Mount Vernon High School to a pair of Class AA state titles.

He averaged 19.5 points and 7.6 rebounds as a high school senior.
