MU women fall to Rice in OT
HOUSTON -- Jessica Kuster led the Rice Owls in a Saturday women's basketball victory over Marshall University, 74-68, in overtime.
Kuster had 26 points and 17 rebounds in her 14th double-double game of the season.
Marshall held a 63-61 lead on Leah Scott's layup with 1:42 remaining in the second half. Kuster's layup tied it, 63-63, with 1:22 left in regulation.
Scott made two foul shots and Marshall went ahead, 65-63 at 1:09, but Kuster's foul shots with 29 seconds to go put the game in overtime.
Maya Hawkins of the Owls opened the overtime with her sixth 3-point shot and Kuster scored on consecutive layups in a 7-0 run. Marshall's only points in overtime came on a Suporia Dickens 3-pointer, which was followed by Kuster making a steal and scoring on another layup.
Rice improved its record to 10-7 overall and 3-1 in Conference USA with the win at home in Tudor Fieldhouse where attendance was 550.
Hawkins added 20 points for the Owls.
Marshall (7-10, 0-4) shook up its starting lineup and was led by players coming off the bench. The starting five included Chelsey Romero, McKenzie Akers, Aja Sorrells, Erica Woods and Norrisha Victrum.
Scott scored 18 while Dickens had 17 and Victrum 10. Chukwuka Ezeigbo had six points and seven rebounds.
