MU volleyball lands 5 recruits
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University volleyball coach Mitch Jacobs announced the addition of five players for the 2013 season.
Marshall recruits are Cassie Weaver and Tayor Riedel from Cabell Midland High School; Elyse Patrick from Chicago; Ally Kiekover of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Allie Kellerman from Louisville, Ky.
"We have certainly been able to fulfill our needs with this very talented group," Jacobs said.
Weaver, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter, is an all-state player and a candidate for state player of the year.
Her high school statistics included 1,874 kills, 209 service aces, 269 blocks and 1,522 digs while averaging 5.1 kills per set as a junior and senior.
"Cassie is a very special athlete who has done a significant amount of maturing throughout her four years of high school," Jacobs said. "It is great that we could keep Cassie here in Huntington. At her size she can do as much on both the offensive and defensive sides as anyone in the country.
"I look forward to being a part of Cassie's entire career and helping first hand with her growth as a player."
Riedel was a two-time all-state selection. She is a 5-5 setter who had career totals of 9.953 assists and 855 digs.
Jacobs said Riedel is one of the finest leaders he's coached.
"I'm just so proud that Taylor chose to wear the green and white," he said. "The setter position at Marshall is in very good hands over the next four years. Knowing we have Sammie (Bane) for two more seasons and another exceptional setter in Taylor for two more years just puts a very big smile on my face."
Weaver and Riedel are also teammates with the River Cities Thunder Volleyball Club.
Patrick was an AAU All-American selection at the 2012 17-under National Championships. She is a 6-2 left-handed, right side player from Marist High School in Chicago, the East Suburban Catholic Conference champion in 2011 and 2012.
A highlight of her senior season was Marist winning the Nike National Tournament of Champions.
Kiekover is a 6-foot middle blocker from Forest Hills Northern High School in Grand Rapids and competed for the Dead Frog Volleyball Club of Kalamazoo, Mich., that placed fifth at the 2012 AAU Nationals.
The 5-8 Kellerman is a defensive specialist and libero position player from Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville. She also played for the United Volleyball Club of New Albany, Ind., that had fifth-place finishes in 2011 and 2012 at the AAU Nationals.
