Southern mess: MU women lose, 67-39
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss had more field goals than Marshall had points in the first half as the Golden Eagles jumped to a 30-point halftime lead and trounced the Thundering Herd 67-39 on Saturday evening at Reed Green Coliseum.
The 39 points is Marshall's lowest point output in a contest since joining Conference USA and lowest in any contest since losing 67-35 to Virginia on Dec. 20, 2005.
The Golden Eagles shot 20-of-33 from the floor in the first half (60 percent) while limiting Marshall to just 16 points as the Herd continued its recent offensive struggles on the road.
After scoring just 56 points total in a loss to the Herd on Jan. 10 in Huntington, Southern Miss amassed 46 points in the first 20 minutes to take complete command of the contest.
Turnovers once again proved to be critical for the Thundering Herd. In addition to starting the game 2-of-15 from the floor, Marshall (13-10, 5-5) committed 13 of its 21 turnovers in the first half. That led to 15 points off turnovers.
Marshall scored 85 points in a double-overtime win against UAB last Saturday, but scored just 86 points total in its two road losses this week.
In the Herd's last six games, the team is averaging 53.3 points a game. That figure is bad, but considering that it also figures in the 85-point output against UAB, it is especially concerning.
The Herd has played each of those six games without the services of leading scorer Tynikki Crook, who continues to be out with a broken hand. Crook's status is still unsure at this point, and Chadwick said he is continuing to search for someone who can fill the scoring void.
Chantelle Handy scored 11 points to serve as the only Marshall player in double figures.
Pauline Love led Southern Miss (7-15, 3-6) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Tanesha Washington added 15 points and Danielle Johnson notched 12 for the Golden Eagles, who have won three straight since a 10-game losing skid.
Marshall is back in action Thursday at home against Tulane. Game time is 7 p.m. at Cam Henderson Center.
