Madness starts today at Marshall

October 11, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- All-Conference USA player Markel Humphrey has an ankle injury, but the other Marshall University men's basketball players are ready to go for Thundering Herd Madness.

Humphrey's status is questionable for the 7 p.m. public practice today in Cam Henderson Center.

Today's function is for the fans while also giving the players a chance to perform for a crowd. College basketball practice officially begins Friday.

The Thundering Herd Madness lineup includes a team introduction, 3-point shootout, slam dunk contest, a scrimmage and an autograph session.

Marshall head coach Donnie Jones commented on each of the players Wednesday during a Victory Club booster group luncheon.

Following are some of the remarks:

No. 4 Markel Humphrey

Atlanta, Ga.

"He's 6-6 and 230 pounds," Jones said. "He has really changed his body. His work ethic has been incredible."

No. 0 Darryl Merthie

6-0, 190, Sr.

Sanford, Fla.

"We're hoping Darryl can get his 80 percent (graduation progress) and earn his extra year back," Jones said.

No. 32 Tyler Wilkerson

Lexington, Ky.

"One of the most improved players on the team," Jones said.

No. 30 Tirrell Baines

"I am really proud of the sacrifice Adam made to this team," Jones said about Williams giving up his scholarship to make room for recruits.

Bedford, N.H.

"Chris is real close to getting back to full strength," Jones said about a back problem that sidelined Lutz throughout the summer.

"Tay has come back from his injuries (car wreck)," Jones said. "He can do a lot of things."
