Marshall travels to Rice this weekend

HOUSTON -- No. 1 Rice is hosting Marshall for a Conference USA weekend baseball series.

Rice (25-9) is ranked first in the nation by Rivals.com and in the top four of five other polls. Rice is 8-2 against ranked teams. The Owls are 9-3 in C-USA and tied for first place with East Carolina.

Games at Reckling Park are 7:30 p.m. today, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Rice freshman Anthony Rendon is hitting .377 for the season with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs.

Rick Hague is hitting .350 for the Owls, who have a .312 team batting average. Lead-off hitter Brock Holt has a .346 average.

Ryan Berry leads the Rice pitching staff with a 4-0 record and 1.96 ERA. Berry has held opponents to a .131 batting average. Mike Ojala is 2-0 and has a 1.43 ERA.

Jordan Rogers was named to the midseason watch list for the national stopper of the year award. Rogers is 5-2 with a 3.37 ERA. He has six saves.

Marshall (15-20, 5-7) has a .271 team batting average.

Josh Valle leads the Thundering Herd with a .315 average. Victor Gomez is hitting .302 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs. Josh Yeager has a .291 average and 20 stolen bases in 25 attempts.

C-USA preseaon player of the year Nate Lape is hitting .265 with eight homers and 26 RBIs.

Dan Straily is the Marshall ace on the mound at 3-0 with a 2.86 ERA. Reliever Austin Coan has five saves.
