May 15, 2009 @ 02:00 AM

CHARLESTON -- Marshall University jumped to an 8-0 second-inning lead and cruised to a 9-2 Conference USA baseball victory over Tulane Thursday at Appalachian Power Park.

Victor Gomez and Rhett Stafford each drove in three runs for the Thundering Herd, who improved to 22-28 overall and 9-13 in C-USA. Perennial league power Tulane (30-23, 11-11) was held scoreless until the sixth inning.

Dan Straily (4-2) earned the victory, allowing an unearned run through six innings. Adam Yeager delivered three of Marshall's 11 hits. Teammates Stafford and Kenny Soccoro each added two hits.

The Thundering Herd scored four runs in each of the opening two innings, highlighted by home runs from Stafford and Gomez.

Marshall and Tulane will play the second game of the series at 2:05 p.m. Thundering Herd freshman left-hander Greg Williams will start against the Green Wave's Conrad Flynn.

Marshall's Josh Valle (10) bumps helmets with Eric Semeniuk (41) as he reaches home plate after hitting a solo homerun against West Virginia State during the baseball game on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the Kennedy Center.
