Marshall baseball falls to Tulane

CHARLESTON -- Tulane scored four runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Marshall, 11-2, in Conference USA baseball Friday at Appalachian Power Park.

The Green Wave (31-23, 12-11 C-USA) racked up 15 hits off four Thundering Herd pitchers. Tulane starter Conrad Flynn and two relievers held Marshall (22-29, 9-14 C-USA) in check.

Sam Honeck's RBI double got Tulane rolling in the first. Seth Henry got the second run home with a double off the top of the wall in left. Jeremy Schaffer made it 3-0 when he scored on a wild pitch by Herd starter Greg Williams. Steve Moritz completed the inning with a triple to drive in Henry to make it 4-0.

Henry finished 3-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI.

Tulane added two runs in the second and one in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.

The Herd got its two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Flynn (7-3) retired the first 11 batters before Josh Valle delivered a single to right. Victor Gomez followed with a home run, his 18th on the season.

The Green Wave responded with a three-run fifth. Nick Boullosa, who had three hits, opened the inning with a single and eventually came home on a hit by Josh Prince. He moved to second on a passed ball and scored on hit and run by Scott Powell. The visitors added an additional run after Schaffer drew a base on balls, moved to third on Henry's third double of the game and scored on a wild pitch for the second time.

Flynn retired Marshall in order in the fifth, two on strikeouts. Aaron Loup worked the sixth, seventh and eighth and allowed just one hit and struck out five. Ryan Doiron tossed a perfect ninth.

Adam Yeager had two hits for Marshall.

The series wraps up today with a game at 2:05 p.m. It's the final game for Military Appreciation Weekend as anyone with a valid active Military ID gets in free. The Herd will wear special camouflage jerseys and they will be auctioned off online beginning at 8 a.m. Monday with bids starting at $100. The auction will close the following Monday at 8 a.m.

Today's game also marks Senior Day as five seniors will be recognized for their achievements. They are Yeager, Andrew Blain, Brandon Casamassima, Nate Lape and Brian Mooney. The ceremony will be highlighted by a video board tribute to the seniors. There will be an alumni cookout for current players and parents as well as former players and parents following the game.
