Marshall RB Grooms arrested
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall running back Kevin Grooms was arrested and charged with underage consumption and obstruction early Sunday morning, according to the Western Regional Jail.
According to the police report, Grooms was stopped in the 1200 Block of Fourth Avenue at 2:41 a.m. on Sunday morning after an officer smelled the strong odor of alcohol and glassy bloodshot eyes.
Grooms, who is 28 days shy of his 21st birthday, admitted to the officer that he had consumed alcohol, but gave the name of "Mike Jennings" to the officer.
Upon further investigation, the officer identified him and charged him with underage consumption and obstruction, a charge brought about for the false name.
At 4 p.m. Sunday, Grooms was arraigned by Cabell County Magistrate Danne Vance and bond was set at $10,000. Grooms was released on a personal recognizance bond, according to Vance.
Grooms was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year after rushing for 737 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had eight receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown in 2012.
Marshall athletics released a statement, saying "We are aware of Kevin's situation and will handle it appropriately and internally."
