HUNTINGTON -- Jalicia Ross blasted a team-high 12 kills and Elizabeth Fleming distributed a match-best 33 assists to power Marshall to a 3-0 win over Houston in Conference USA volleyball Sunday at Cam Henderson Center. Scores were 25-22, 25-16 and 25-14.
The Thundering Herd (9-8, 2-5 C-USA) snapped a four-match losing streak and improved to 5-1 in the all-time series with the Cougars.
Leading 2-0 in the match, Marshall stormed out to a 19-8 lead on the strength of three Megan Carlson kills, and two each from Ross and Kristin Marcum. From there, the teams would score five points apiece to bring the score to 24-14, before Marcum sealed the set and match with her fourth kill of the contest.
In addition to her 12 kills, Ross finished with a .579 hitting percentage (12K, 1E, 19TA), while Carlson ended the match with eight kills and a team-best 10 digs.
Justine Farmer led Houston with a match-high 13 kills. Amanda Carson finished with a match-best 14 digs and Kelsey King handed out 28 helpers.
The Herd starts a two-game road trip Friday at Texas-El Paso. The finale is Sunday at Tulane.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
HUNTINGTON -- Erika Duncan scored in the 33rd minute to get Marshall even and Marisa Leconte notched her first goal of the season at 39:51 to help the Thundering Herd to a 2-1 victory over Tulsa in Conference USA soccer Sunday morning at Sam Hood Field.
The Golden Hurricane (6-7-2, 1-4-1 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute on a goal by Alyvia Rogers.
Leconte's score came from 35 yards out as Marshall (5-5-4, 3-3-0 C-USA) reached three wins in league play for the first time since 2002. The Herd went 3-7-2 in the Mid-American Conference that year.
Sunday's match wrapped up Marshall's inaugural Breast Cancer Awareness weekend, where the Herd wore pink jerseys to recognize the devastating disease. The program's Kicks Against Breast Cancer auction includes the pink jerseys the players wore this weekend and bidding will end at midnight, Wednesday (Oct. 15). Marshall's homestand continues this weekend with two matches. UTEP visits Friday at 7 p.m. and Colorado College is in next Sunday at noon.
MEN'S SOCCER
TULSA, Okla. -- No. 20 Tulsa recorded a 3-0 victory over Marshall on Saturday.
The Golden Hurricane (8-3-1, 4-0-0 C-USA) had two goals by Jose Parada and one by Austin Neil.
Marshall (0-10-1, 0-3-0) plays again at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Florida International at Sam Hood Field.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
HUNTINGTON -- Siobhan Schuurman won the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events to pace Marshall in a Saturday women's meet at Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium. The Thundering Herd defeated Xavier (171-124) and lost to East Carolina (224-76) and West Virginia (171-124).
Rachel Hannum was fourth in the 1-meter diving and third in the 3-meter event. Jessica Sweeney was fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:40.07). Lindsey Stock was fifth (10:43.80).
Kayla Truswell had third-place finishes in both the 100 (59.86) and 200 (2:08.98) butterfly events. Marshall is at home again Saturday for a 2 p.m. meet with Radford.
