MU women hope to finish 2012 strong

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Marshall Thundering Herd women's basketball is looking to close 2012 on a winning note.

Marshall and Navy match 6-6 records in a 2 p.m., Sunday game at Alumni Hall that is the Herd's final outing before the New Year, and also its final con-conference contest. Marshall begins its Conference USA schedule Jan. 10 at Southern Miss.

The Herd and Midshipmen have common opponents Jackson State and Marquette. The Herd lost to both while the Mids defeated Jackson State and lost to Marquette.

Sophomore guard Shay Weaver leads Marshall with a 10.4 scoring average. Chukwuka Ezeigbo, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, averages 9.3 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Marshall has six other players averaging at least six points per game.

Veronica Ruiz and Suporia Dickens average 5.4 and 5.2 rebounds respectively.

Navy is the two-time defending Patriot League champion and NCAA tournament participant in 2012 and 2011.

Alix Membreno is a junior guard averaging 12.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Mids. Junior forward Jade Geif averages 12.0 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Tolsia High School graduate Kara Pollinger, a 5-7 junior guard for Navy, is scoring 11.8 points a game. Pollinger had connected on at least three 3-point shots in seven games.
