Herd's Blair wins preseason honor

February 17, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Aaron Blair from the Marshall University baseball team was named to the USA Baseball preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List.

The release of the watch list marks USA Baseball's first step toward identifying the top player in college baseball.

Blair is a 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior right-handed pitcher from Las Vegas, Nev.

Last summer he pitched for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League with a 6-0 record and league-leading 1.17 ERA. He won six times in eight regular season starts before picking up two playoff victories and lowering his ERA to 0.75.

He was 2-8 last season for Marshall with a 3.98 ERA while striking out 82 and walking 28 in 83.2 innings pitched.

The Golden Spikes Award Watch List includes 50 players to begin the season. A second 60-player list will be announced May 2.

A list of 30 semifinalists will be released May 28 and sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches, members of the media that closely follow amateur baseball, select professional baseball personnel and USA Baseball staff members.

Fan voting also begins May 28 at GoldenSpikesAward.com where people will be asked to choose three players from the list of 30 names.

USA Baseball will announce three finalists June 3 and fan voting will continue.

The Golden Spikes Award will be presented July 19.
