Volleyball team earns win over East Carolina
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall got Homecoming weekend going Friday with a 3-1 volleyball defeat of East Carolina before a crowd of 345 in Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall improved its season record to 15-5 and is 5-1 in Conference USA. Scores were 25-21, 25-22, 8-25 and 25-21.
"It is a good win," Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We came back after a little bit of a letdown in set three and finished really strong. We kept our foot on the gas for a while."
"East Carolina really started doing some good things in set four and they made it a close battle. We jumped out to a 10-1 lead, but they fought really hard. We just have to take care of business at home. We will keep going forward. We have five wins in the conference and no question, we need at least nine or ten to get in the tournament."
Laura Der of the Thundering Herd had a double-double performance with 20 kills and 14 defensive digs. Sacha Byous-McConnell followed with 18 kills.
Dorothy Rahal and Katy Schad contributed 22 and 15 digs respectively whlle setter Sammie Bane had 47 assists.
East Carolina (1-16, 0-6) was led by Kelly Derby with 12 kills.
Marshall's next match is Friday, Oct. 12, against Rice at 5:30 p.m.
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Kai Broomfield and Karlyn Timko from Marshall recorded singles victories Friday on opening day of the Tribe Invitational at William and Mary.
Broomfield defeated Srinidhi Raghavan from Penn, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Timko beat Mafalda Lhorca from Norfolk State, 6-0, 6-1.
Ellie Ball and Broomfield took a doubles win against Andrea Macchiavello and Mafalda/Lhorca of Norfolk State, 8-2.
HOUSTON -- Rice had four players with goals Friday in a 4-1 women's soccer defeat of Marshall.
Rice, 7-5-2 season and 5-1-0 in Conference USA, led 2-0 at halftime and went up 3-1 in the second period.
Alyssa Cathey from Marshall (6-7-0, 2-3-0) broke up the shutout with an assist from Sarah Vinson.
Marshall stays in town for a 1 p.m., Sunday, match against the Houston Cougars.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Marshall takes on Evansville in a 7 p.m., Saturday, men's soccer match at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
Marshall, 8-1-1, is undefeated in non-conference play. The Purple Aces are 6-3.
