Softball team hires Nielson as assistant
HUNTINGTON -- Randi Nielson, who won 62 games as a Marshall University softball pitcher, is the Thundering Herd's new pitching coach.
Nielson pitched for Marshall from 2002 to 2005.
"Randi has been one of the most successful pitchers to come through our program," said Marshall head coach Shonda Stanton. "She was a tireless worker on the mound and will bring that same experience as a coach."
Nielson was named as the 2003 Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year with 23 victories and a 1.32 ERA when Marshall won the league championship. Her career totals for wins, appearances (127), ERA (2.20), innings (659) and strikeouts (429) rank high in the school records.
She played professional softball in Holland during the 2006 season.
Her sister, Kelly, is the Thundering Herd shortstop.
Nielson has a tremendous amount of pride in the Marshall program and a great understanding of Stanton's system, the coach said.
"I enjoyed coaching Randi and now look forward to working side by side with her as we get Herd softball to the next level," Stanton said.
As a pro player in Holland she also did some coaching.
She has also done volunteer coaching with the Arizona Impulse, an age 18-Under ASA travel team from Tucson, Ariz.
The Tucson native graduated from Marshall (2005) with a business management degree and is receiving a master's in July.
