HUNTINGTON -- For the second time in less than three weeks, Marshall University is mourning the loss of one of its recent players.

Donte Newsome, a former Marshall running back and linebacker, was shot and killed outside of Fluid nightclub early Saturday morning.

And just as it did on June 15 when former All-American Johnathan Goddard passed away, the news sent chills through the Marshall community.

"You have someone who is so young and had a lot in front of him, but regardless of age, it's so final that it is difficult," Marshall University athletic director Bob Marcum said.

Newsome not only played for Marshall University from 2002-05, he also was a member of the Huntington Heroes in 2006 for coach Garry McPeek.

McPeek, an assistant coach for the Lexington Horsemen of AF2, had been in contact with several of his current players at Lexington and others he had coached and the sentiment was mutual in all contacted.

"I talked to Chris Royal and Jamus this morning and there is disbelief," McPeek said. "He was always smiling and had a great smile. It's just so tragic and we want to get a hold of the family to help. Donte was a wonderful football player and a great kid to be around. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."

News of Newsome's death comes on the same day as the passing of Dr. Jose Ricard, the team physician since 1981. It also occurred just 20 days since Goddard's death in a motorcycle accident in Jacksonville, Fla.

With the three deaths in the Marshall athletic family, it has been a tough month to deal with for Thundering Herd fans.

"It's just devastating," said Woody Woodrum, WRVC radio personality. "To have that happen in one day is just really tough to handle."
