MU women golfers struggle in Va.
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Marshall is in 19th place after its two rounds in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate being played on the par-71 River Course at the Kingsmill Resort.
The Thundering Herd shot 327 Monday for a 656 total. Rachel Thompson carded a 76 for a 154. Other Herd scores are Korakot Simsiriwong, 76 -- 157; Maria Battaglia, 85 -- 167; Caitlyn Morrone, 92 -- 180; and Kristyn Morrone, 90 -- 181.
Second-round play was suspended at 6:45 p.m. Play will resume at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday. The tournament has been reduced to 36 holes.
Boston College led Gardner-Webb and Wofford by seven shots after round one. Hannah Pierce of Longwood was leader in the clubhouse at 147 after shooting 73. High Point's Tan Cheeranont was a shot back. The Herd is done, but won't know its final position until play is complete.
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall meets Stetson at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Stetson's Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand. The Thundering Herd (14-12, 3-3 Conference USA) and Hatters (15-9, 0-3 Atlantic Sun) have met just three times (2002, 2004 and 2010). Stetson leads the series 2-1.
Marshall, on a four-game winning streak, continues its Florida trip this weekend with a C-USA series against UCF (16-14, 1-5 C-USA) at the UCF Softball Complex in Orlando. The meet Friday at 5:30 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. The Herd swept the Knights last year (5-0, 4-0 and 1-0).
Ashley Gue leads the Herd offense with a .347 batting average and 16 stolen bases. Pitcher Andi Williams (14-11) went 4-0 last week. She has 192 strikeouts to date.
Chrissy Morello tops Stetson hitters with a .364 average. As a team, the Hatters have hit 23 home runs.
For UCF, Maddy Schroeder is hitting a team-best .318. Kahley Novak has 24 of the team's 74 stolen bases.
