Prospects slated for weekend MU camps
HUNTINGTON -- May hardly served as an offseason time for Marshall University football coaches.
Most of the coaching staff spent the month traversing the country, kicking off recruiting efforts toward the 2010 signing class. Those efforts continue this weekend with a pair of camps at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Several high-profile student-athletes will attend today's camp for grades one through 12 and Sunday's Senior Advanced Camp.
Tight end Andrew Cordasco was among prospects on campus as early as Friday. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound standout from Jamestown H.S. (Va.) met with coaches prior to weekend camp.
Several other high-profile potential recruits were targeted last month, mapping the prospective 2010 recruiting class. Along with Cordasco, several will visit campus this weekend for football camps.
Count Chase Williams among the top prospects on Marshall's recruiting board. The 6-3, 235-pound linebacker from Loudoun County H.S. (Va.) is rated No. 34 at his position nationally by the Scout.com recruiting Web site. West Virginia, Rice and SMU also reportedly have offered Williams a scholarship.
Florida and UAB reportedly have offered playmaking defensive back DeQuandous Cobbs. The 6-0, 180-pound standout from Auburn H.S. (Ala.) combines physicality with speed.
Barry Brunetti projects among the Thundering Herd's more intriguing prospects. The versatile Memphis University High School offensive threat threw for 1,251 yards and added 704 rushing. Brunetti rushed and passed for 18 touchdowns during his junior season.
Ivan McCartney ranks among Marshall's top prospects. The 6-3, 180-pound wide receiver boasts size and speed at the outside 'X' wideout spot. Boston College, Florida, Georgia, Miami (Fla.), Ole Miss, North Carolina, Oregon, Central Florida, Florida International and West Virginia also reportedly have offered McCartney.
The rangy, yet physical wideout converted 12 of his 21 receptions into touchdowns last season and totaled 648 yards.
Cordasco and others will tour campus this weekend while some players will schedule official visits during the 2009 season.
