Ross takes two races for Herd but Ohio wins meet
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University freshman Danica Ross was a double event winner Tuesday against the Ohio Bobcats in a women's swim meet at Fitch Natatorium at Cam Henderson Center.
Ohio won the dual meet, 167-116.
Ross won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.56 seconds and won the 100 freestyle with a personal best time of 52.87 seconds.
Thundering Herd freshman Kelsey Ferguson was a winner in the 200 breaststroke with her best time of 2:25.55.
Madison Lawhorn won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.31) while Arlie Rykosky was first in the 200 IM (2:12.63).
Marshall's other victory was in the 800 freestyle relay, the final event of the meet. Ross, Tiffany Aeling, Sarah Coghlin and Kaley Gregory broke a 10-year Fitch pool record with a time of 7:49.78.
"I cannot be happier with the performance tonight," said first-year Marshall head coach Bill Tramel. "Our hard work is really starting to show. We have had a number of hard weeks of training over the recent holiday break and we haven't laid up at all.
"To perform as we did tonight is very satisfying and even though we fell short on the scoreboard, I felt like we won tonight."
The Herd's next meet is Saturday against Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
