Marshall baseball team picked last in C-USA

HUNTINGTON -- Conference USA baseball head coaches predicted a last-place finish for Marshall's Thundering Herd.

Rice was picked first in the preseason poll with seven of the nine votes for the top spot. The Owls have either won the regular season title or C-USA tournament championship in each of their seven seasons as a member.

Southern Miss and Tulane also received votes for first place.

Rice senior infielder Christian Stringer was tabbed as the preseason player of the year, Stringer hit .343 last season. He maintained a .978 fielding percentage as the Rice second baseman where he turned or started 35 double plays.

Austin Kubitza from Rice, a junior right-hander, was named as the preseason pitcher of the year. He was an all-conference selection last season with a 6-5 record and 2.69 ERA.
