Herd softball team falls to Michigan, South Fla.
TAMPA, Fla. -- No. 10 ranked South Florida softball pitcher Lindsey Richardson tossed a five-inning no-hitter Friday in an 8-0 victory over Marshall at the USF Softball Stadium.
The game was part of the USF-Wilson DeMarini Openind Day Tournament.
No. 15 Michigan defeated Marshall, 6-1, in the first game of the day.
South Florida chased Marshall pitcher Andi Williamson with four runs in the fourth inning when Kourtney Salvarola and Lee Ann Spivey delivered RBI doubles.
Marshall's only base runner was Jazmine Valle, who walked in the fourth inning.
Michigan touched Williamson for eight hits and six earned runs.
Key hits for the Wolverines were Taylor Hasselbach's two-run single in the fifth inning and Sierra Romero's two-run double in the sixth inning.
Marshall scored in the fifth inning when Shaelynn Braxton led off with double, advanced on a groundout and crossed the plate on a throwing error.
The Thundering Herd continues in the tournament with Saturday games against Florida Atlantic at 9 a.m. and Samford at 1:30 p.m.
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University women's tennis plays 26th-ranked Purdue in an 11 a.m., Saturday, match in the Huntington Tennis Club at Melody T Farm adjacent to the Huntington Mall.
The Thundering Herd also has an 11 a.m., Sunday, match against Miami (Ohio).
Marshall (3-2) is on a three-match losing streak.
Purdue (1-1) has a win over No. 32 Washington State and a loss to No. 14 Northwestern. Miami (Ohio) is 2-4 with wins over Cincinnati and California (Pa.). The RedHawks have a loss to No. 49 Indiana.
