MU softball team wins two
HUNTINGTON -- The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team took two games in a doubleheader Saturday to complete a three-game sweep of Robert Morris.
The Herd took the first game 11-3 and the second 4-3.
MU's Briana Hope hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning as part of a 2-for-3, 5 RBI day.
The Herd would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Catcher Taylor Winton also homered in the game for Marshall, in a 2-for-2 effort at the dish that included an RBI single in addition to the two-run shot.
MU pitcher Andi Williamson started both games, and brought her record on the season above .500 (10-8). Williamson went four innings allowing one hit and one earned run in the first contest.
Robert Morriss' Geena Bodolato (2-2) was tagged with the loss.
Williamson went 3.2 innings and allowed one run in the second contest.
The Herd jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when a single from Jazmine Valle brought Ashley Gue and Hope home.
Hope hit a double in the bottom of the seventh that brought in Gue and Kaelyn Greene for the win.
The team next plays Wednesday at the University of Kentucky.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The MU baseball team dropped two in a doubleheader with Wofford Saturday.
Jesse Morris pitched a complete game shutout for the Terriers (6-5), allowing only two hits and striking out 10 batters in the first game, a 6-0 victory.
Wofford was led by shortstop Alec Paradowski, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the game.
Wayland Moore (1-1) got the loss for Marshall. Moore pitched 3.1 innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs.
The second contest offered up more offense, with the Herd and Wafford tied at 8 going into the bottom of the ninth.
Wofford catcher Matthew Ramsay pulled off a suicide squeeze to bring center-fielder Matthew Kaskow home for the 9-8 victory.
Marshall only allowed six earned runs, with three coming off of errors.
The Herd (3-6) plays Sunday at 1 p.m. against USC Upstate, which defeated Marshall 3-0 Friday.
HUNTINGTON -- Coming off of a 5-2 win Friday over UNC Greensboro, the Herd tennis team will host Old Dominion at 10 a.m., Sunday, in the Huntington Tennis Club.
The team is 5-5 on the season after weathering a four-match losing skid from Jan. 26 through Feb. 9.
The team has won three of its last four matches.
