Herd students get in on 'Harlem Shake'

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University students got in on the Harlem Shake craze Tuesday afternoon in the Memorial Student Center.
More than three dozen students -- some dressed in silly costumes -- came out for the dance, which lasted about a minute. The event was recorded and will be one of the estimated 4,000 Harlem Shake videos being uploaded each day.
"I wanted to be a part of the Internet craze," said junior Dane Lehman, from Beckley. "It's a bragging rights thing and school pride."
John Lewis, a public relations major from Washington, D.C., organized the event. The Harlem Shake dance craze first dates to 1981 but has been revived as an Internet meme this year.
He said it was something fun to break up the day and supports the diversity efforts on campus.
"This is for people to remember when they graduate, all the fun things at Marshall," he said.
It was sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.
