After short delay, MU set to debut

A Marshall University men's basketball game against Bluefield College postponed Monday when Superstorm Sandy arrived, is rescheduled at 8 p.m., Thursday, in Cam Henderson Center as part of a doubleheader with Concord University playing the Marshall women's team at 5:30 p.m.
Admission is $5 and good for both games. Free admission and candy for kids in Halloween costumes. All chairback reserved seats were sold as part of the men's season ticket package, so spectators for the women's game will be moved into the general admission seating area for the second contest.
"Unfortunately, we had to postpone it, but we certainly understand the circumstances," third-season Marshall head coach Tom Herrion said. "We were amped up to play (Monday). We've got to regain that excitement and I'm sure we will."
Kareem Canty, D.D. Scarver, Elijah Pittman, Tamron Manning and Austin Loop are suiting up for the first time as Marshall players.
Marshall also has nine lettermen back from a 21-14 season that ended in the National Invitation Tournament, including junior guard Dre Kane and senior forward Dennis Tinnon, who where chosen for the preseason All-Conference USA first team and second team respectively.
"We'll be able to see some different things with officials and fans" in the arena, Herrion said.
Bluefield College is a first-season member of the NAIA Mid-South Conference. The Rams were 19-16 last season playing in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Coach Richard Mogan's club is led by 6-foot-7 senior Byron Carpenter and a pair of guards, 5-8 junior Kearston Marion and 5-7 sophomore Andrew Wilson, who make a lot of 3-point baskets.
Carpenter averaged 21.3 points and 8.9 rebounds a game as the AAC Player of the Year.
Marion and Wilson averaged 16.7 and 14.6 points respectively while combining to go 161-for-409 on their 3-pointers.
Herrion said the Rams are small, quick and dangerous.
"First of all, there are good players at a lot of levels of basketball," Herrion said. "And, it's still early and every team has to find its way."
Marshall has a closed-door scrimmage Saturday with the Winthrop Eagles in Beckley before opening the season at home Nov. 9 against Longwood University. Winthrop and Longwood are both in the Big South Conference.
