ECU beats Herd in softball series finale
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- East Carolina scored four times in the fourth inning and twice each in the fifth and sixth to notch a 9-1, run-rule win over Marshall on Saturday in the final game in the Conference USA series at ECU Softball Stadium.
Jordan Lewis startes the fourth for the Pirates (16-10, 5-4 C-USA) with a homer. It was her fifth of the season and 19th of her career, good for seventh place on the all-time home run list. Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin added an RBI single and Abby Wynne drove in the final two with a single to left.
The Thundering Herd (9-20, 3-6 C-USA) got its run in the fifth. Kristina Braxton reached on a fielder's choice and got the RBI. In the top of the sixth, the Herd had the bases loaded with one out, but failed to score.
Casey Alcorn delivered a 2-run homer in the fifth for the Pirates and they got two unearned runs in the sixth.
Caroline Umphlett went the first five for the Pirates to get the win. Jordan Dixon, who had both wins Friday when Marshall swept a doubleheader, took the loss.
Marshall's next game is Wednesday at home against Miami (Ohio). Game time is 4 p.m. at Dot Hicks Field.
MIAMI -- Edwin Rios belted a homer and drove in four runs to lead Florida International to a 9-0 win over Marshall to even the Conference USA series at 1-1. It's the second time the Thundering Herd (6-14, 3-5 C-USA) has been blanked this season.
In the seventh, the Owls (19-4, 5-3 C-USA) used five hits and a Marshall error to score six times on the way to their third straight win. The Herd had just four hits FIU starter Cody Crouse and two relievers.
The teams close out the series Sunday at 11 a.m. Matt Margaritonda (2-0) will start for Marshall.
