Donte Newsome's family sets up fund
HUNTINGTON — The parents of slain former Marshall University football player Donte Newsome have established a fund for their son.
Bruce and Angela Smith, who live in Virginia, have opened an account at Fifth Third Bank, 1566 Hal Greer Blvd., Huntington.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the “Donte D. Newsome Memorial Fund” can do so at the bank.
Newsome, 25, was shot and killed early Saturday morning outside Fluid nightclub on Fourth Avenue, following an altercation inside the club.
Huntington police have arrested Jerel Garner, who is from Rand near Charleston, and charged him with first-degree murder in the case.
Newsome, who played at Marshall from 2002 to 2005, was a fullback and linebacker playing professional indoor football for the Amarillo Dusters, a Texas team in af2.
He joined the Amarillo team this season.
“Anybody that met Donte knows what kind of a guy he was,” said head coach Chris MacKeown in a report on www.dustersfootball.com. “I can’t say enough good things about him.”
Amarillo will retire Newsome’s jersey No. 2.
The Dusters are seeking league approval for a sticker of Newsome’s jersey number to be put on the back of each player’s helmet. The team is also dedicating the remainder of the season to the memory of Newsome.
Newsome’s home jersey will hang in the team locker room for the remainder of the season, the Amarillo Globe-News newspaper reported. His road jersey will be sent to his family, the report said.
Amarillo’s team was idle last weekend. The Dusters play a road game Monday in Kennewick, Wash.
“This is a tragic situation that is just tough to deal with, and there is no doubt that this is a huge hurdle our team has to face in the coming weeks,” MacKeown said. “Donte will definitely be missed.”
The final home game for the Dusters is July 21. The Dusters players, coaches, and office staff will have a ceremony honoring the memory of Newsome at the game.
