Timberwolves win tournament again

Jun. 20, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Teams from seven schools packed into Marshall University's Cam Henderson Center and Gullickson Gym on Wednesday to learn from Thundering Herd volleyball coach Mitch Jacobs and his camp staff.

At the end of the day, it was much of the same as Spring Valley High School won the team camp tournament title for the fifth consecutive year.

"It was a great camp and a great turnout and I support anything that our local schools do," Jacobs said. "Hopefully, we can get good relationships with these coaches and see a lot of good volleyball this year."

Ironically, the Timberwolves were the only commuting team to the tournament, which has lower rates for teams who do not stay on campus.

Teams such as Tyler Consolidated, Williamstown and Southern (Ohio) made the trek to Huntington to participate, but surprisingly, other local schools were not on hand -- a change from years past.

"I get excited to see Spring Valley here every year, and in years past, sometimes Midland has been here, sometimes Huntington High," Jacobs said. "I love to see the local teams because they represent the strong ties here. It would be great for them to take advantage of the 3-day camp with the commuter rate. It's pretty inexpensive, which is how we make it for them."
