MU's Blair makes national watch list
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University pitcher Aaron Blair was named to USA Baseball's midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list.
The 60-player list includes candidates for national top amateur player honors.
Blair, a right-handed junior from Las Vegas, Nev., has a 5-3 record and 2.53 ERA this season with 70 strikeouts in 64.0 innings.
Marshall and Memphis open a Conference USA weekend baseball series Friday at AutoZone Park in Memphis, Tenn.
Friday's game begins at 7:30 p.m.
Marshall (18-26, 5-10 C-USA) is eighth in the nine-team conference standings.
Andrew Dundon leads the Thundering Herd with a .313 batting average and Isaac Ballou is hitting .312. Nathan Gomez has a .290 average, two home runs and 22 runs batted in.
Gray Stafford is hitting .263 for the Herd with two homers and 20 RBIs. Eric Escobedo (.247) leads the squad with 22 runs batted in.
Memphis (27-19, 9-9 C-USA) sits fifth in the standings.
The Tigers have a trio of .300 hitters -- Carter White (.328), Tucker Tubbs (.321) and Zach Willis (.308).
Jake Little is hitting .299 with four homers and 26 RBIs. Drew Griffin (.284) leads the Tigers with 29 RBIs while Colton Simbeck (.227) has five homers.
Sam Moll (6-3) and Erik Schoenrock (5-3) lead the Memphis pitchers in wins while Jonathan Van Eaton has nine saves.
TRACK AND FIELD
ATHENS, Ohio -- Marshall women's track and field joins the Ohio Bobcats and other competitors Friday in the Ohio Open meet at Goldsberry Track. Admission is free.
Marshall is sending only throwers and distance runners.
Amanda Hottenstein and Bethany will be in the shot put and joined by Carrie Corriell in the hammer. Corriell is also in the discus. Amanda Kennedy is in the javelin.
Kelley Mortakis will double up in the 1500-meter and 3000-meter runs. Paige Govey and Lexie McEntire are in the 800.
