MU Notebook: Harvey brings strength at weak side linebacker

August 25, 2008 @ 12:15 AM

Meet the new generation of college football weak side linebackers.

It's long been a marquee position at Marshall University, anchored by speedy playmakers such as William King and John Grace. Maybe they were a tad undersized, but quickness and mobility allowed each to run down plays sideline to sideline.

Looking to continue the program's tradition at that position -- but certainly in a different manner -- is Mario Harvey. Otherwise known as "Thumper" the 6-foot, 244-pound junior ranks among the team's top hitters, adding a physical presence to the Thundering Herd defensive front seven.

Harvey takes over as full-time starter beginning with Saturday's season opener against Illinois State. Kickoff at Joan C. Edwards Stadium is 4:30 p.m. and the game will be televised by WOWK.

The Forsyth, Ga., native finished his debut season at Marshall strong last year, starting three games. Harvey played in nine contests overall, stockpiling 53 tackles -- seventh-best on the team -- despite part-time duty.

He totaled 11 tackles, including 10 solos, in his first start against UCF. Harvey significantly factored in Marshall's upset of East Carolina with a season-high 13 tackles and a sack.

The Thundering Herd's defensive scheme has altered under first-year defensive coordinator Rick Minter, but Harvey remains a playmaker in the making. He worked with the first team throughout spring drills, and will line up alongside fellow linebackers Maurice Kitchens (middle) and either Corey Hart or Andre Portis (strong side) on Saturday.

"I'm really comfortable in the system," Harvey said. "This year they put a lot of pressure on my back. They told me I'm going to be a starter, so I got in and did what I had to do, and I'm a starter now.

"I've got a big role in the defense."

Like many of his defensive teammates, Harvey's role will be varied. Physically, he's strong enough to play on the line, and his stocky frame doesn't compromise his relative quickness.

Last season's high tackle volume in limited time indicates the junior's potential. Versatility is key at what remains a key position in Marshall's defense, meaning Harvey must have the playbook down entering game week. The former Hargrave Military standout is fine with the varied duties.

"It doesn't matter, in or out of the box, as long as I get to the ball," Harvey said.

QB CLUB: The Quarterback Club's opening luncheon for the 2008 season kicks off at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pullman Plaza Hotel. Marshall head coach Mark Snyder, offensive coordinator John Shannon and Minter will serve as speakers.
