Herd volleyball team tops Southern Illinois

HUNTINGTON -- Elyse Panick's eight kills led the Marshall University volleyball team Friday in a 3-0 defeat of Southern Illinois at Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall (3-7) defeated the Salukis (3-6), 25-18, 25-17, 25-23, in the opening match of the two-day Thunder Invitational tournament. Eastern Kentucky met Kent State in the Friday late match.

Dorothy Rahal's performance was a Marshall highlight as she tallied 17 digs and two service aces.

Laura Der posted seven kills and five digs in her first appearance coming back from an injury. Cassie Weaver collected seven kills while Ally Kiekover had six kills with a .500 hitting percentage. Sacha Byous-McConnell recorded five kills and Sammie Bane had 20 assists.

"It was a great individual performance tonight by Rahal," Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "She read beautifully and made the plays that we needed.

"Of course, it was great to have (Laura) Der back on the court. I looked forward to getting her back into the matches."

Southern Illinois was led by Jessica Whitehead with seven kills. Taylor Pippen and Elly Braaten added six and five respectively. Alex Rivera contributed 12 digs and Hannah Kaminsky had 19 assists.

HUNTINGTON -- Oakland edged Marshall, 2-1, in a Friday match of the Qdoba Invitational men's soccer tournament at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.

Oakland broke into the victory column with a 1-2-2 record while Marshall remains winless at 0-4-1.

Jahvon Allison's goal for Marshall with an assist from Daniel Jodah knotted the score, 1-1, at 72:03. Matt Dudley's unassisted goal for the Grizzlies won it at 86:17.

St. Francis (Pa.) downed IPFW in the opening match, 3-1, with goals by Nick Kolarac, Matt Loughnane and Ty Geesey. IPFW had a goal from Jacob Murphy.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Marshall runs Saturday in the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic on the Vaughn's Gap Cross Country Course in Percy Warner Park. The men's 8K run begins at 9 a.m. followed by the women's 5K at 10 a.m.
