Herd volleyball team falls at home to UAB
HUNTINGTON -- UAB toppled Marshall University, 3-2, in a Friday night volleyball match in Cam Henderson Center.
UAB, 14-11 for the season pulled even with Marshall (16-7) at 6-3 in Conference USA. The Blazers won, 18-25, 25-21, 10-25, 25-23, 15-12.
Sam Skinner and Sam Serley led UAB with 17 and 11 kills respectively.
Marshall was led in kills by Laura Der (26), Katy Schad (14) and Sacha Byous-McConnell (13). Schad completed a double-double with 20 defensive digs. Sammie Bane had 58 assists.
The Thundering Herd stays home for a 1 p.m., Sunday, match with Memphis.
SWIMMING
HUNTINGTON -- Sarah Kay won three events for Marshall in Friday's 175-121 dual meet women's swimming victory over Youngstown State in Fitch Natatorium.
Kay won the 100-yard butterfly, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley.
Lauren Hurd was a winner in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
Kay and Hurd were on the winning 200 medley relay with Madison Lawhorn and Kacey Preun.
Lawhorn was first in the 100 breaststroke, Preun won the 1,000 freestyle, Kaley Gregory won the 500 freestyle and Sarah Coghlin won the 200 freestyle.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Morgan Cain's first goal of the season Friday gave Marshall women's soccer a 1-0 victory at Southern Miss.
Cain scored on an 18-yard unassisted shot at 88:41 of the match. Goakeeper Lindsey Kerns recorded the shutout with four saves.
Marshall (7-9-1, 3-5-1 Conference USA) plays another road match Sunday at UCF, a 1 p.m. kickoff. Southern Miss fell to 4-10-1 overall and 1-7-0 conference.
TENNIS
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Karli Timko and Kai Broomfield from Marshall won singles matches Friday and moved to the second stage of the qualifying round at the ITA Atlantic Regional women's tennis event at Virginia Tech.
Timko defeated Josefin Stange-Jonsson from Maryland-Baltimore Co., 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, while Broomfield beat Emily Mathis from West Virginia, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Other Marshall players swing into action Saturday.
MEN'S SOCCER
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Marshall (10-2-1, 2-2-0 Conference USA) visits UAB (7-5-2, 2-3-0) play a Conference USA men's soccer match at 3 p.m., Saturday, on UAB's West Campus Field.
Fifth-place Marshall lost a conference match Wednesday against Kentucky, 1-0. UAB, once ranked No. 25, has lost consecutive conference matches to Kentucky and Tulsa.
