Marshall men will face new foe in '08-'09
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall men's basketball will face at least one new non-conference opponent in the 2008-09 season.
UT Arlington, a Southland Conference school in Arlington, Texas, announced it is playing a Dec. 13 game against the Thundering Herd in Cam Henderson Center.
West Virginia's non-conference schedule lists the annual Capital Classic matchup with Marshall at the Charleston Civic Center for either Jan. 13 or 14.
Marshall will play host to the Ohio Bobcats on Dec. 17, according to a report in The Athens Post newspaper.
The Herd is also expected to be part of the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla., a four-game exempted event that only counts as two games against a school's limit.
Marshall will open the Glenn Wilkes Classic with a home game, then play three contests in Florida.
Deron Goheen from the Daytona Beach tournament sponsor, Sport Tours International, said an announcement about participating teams will be made in July.
UT Arlington is the defending Southland Conference champion and lost to Conference USA winner Memphis in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Mavericks return several key players from a 21-12 team including 6-foot-7 Anthony Vereen, who averaged 13.8 points.
Ohio is the Herd's oldest NCAA Division I rival and leads the all-time series, 50-43.
