PIPESTEM, W.Va. -- Going into the West Virginia Junior Amateur, the par-72 Pipestem Resort course made Ona's Brooke Bellomy apprehensive.
After a 79 in one round, the Cabell Midland sophomore's apprehension subsided a bit. Tuesday, Bellomy shot another 79 to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the Girls 15-18 Division with a 158 total and 6-shot edge over Elizabeth Frederick of Charleston.
"It's exciting and definitely a relief," Bellomy said in an interview by cellphone on her way home. "Coming in I didn't think I'd play that good. After the first day and I saw how the course set up, I thought OK, I can handle it."
Bellomy led Frederick by one when the day began, but Frederick finished with 84.
"On drives you've got some room," Bellomy said. "I putted decent both days. The greens were that fast. It was tough. Elizabeth gave me a run but I pulled through."
This is the first West Virginia Golf Association title for Bellomy. Rest time is minimal for Bellomy as she is scheduled to compete today in the Tri-State Junior Tour event at Sugarwood Golf Course. After that, it's off to the beach for a week.
Ryan Mason of Bridgeport carded a 74 to capture the Boys 17-18 title with a 143. That score makes him overall winner as well. He finished a shot ahead of Marshall recruit Carson Schambach, who closed with 70 and 144. Marshall recruit Patton Couch was seventh (148) and Bosten Miller, defending champion and Thundering Herd recruit, ended up in a three-way tie for eighth (149).
Hurricane's Aaron Barna continued his run of success. He shot a second 73 for a 146 and 6-shot victory over Hurricane High teammates Brian Anania and Sam Booth. Barna was medalist in Class AAA in the 2007 West Virginia High School Tournament and helped the Redskins win the team title.
Thadd Obecny of Wheeling had the easiest time, shooting 74 for a 150 to win the 10-12 age group. He wound up 24 shots ahead of Christian Casingal of Charleston.
George Hamrick of Red House carded a 76 for 151 and 4-shot win over Woody Woodward of Bridgeport in the 13-14 age group.
In 10-14 girls, Sydney Snodgrass had a 92 for 181. She won by nine over Nikita Sangani of Charleston.
