Little Leaguers embark on state tournaments

HUNTINGTON -- Barboursville and Ceredo-Kenova, the District 1 champion and runner-up respectively, are headed to the Clarksburg/Bridgeport area for the Little League Baseball 11-12 year-old state tournament.

Pool play begins Saturday for 14 all-star teams, including District 3 champion Hurricane.

The Barboursville team plays a 4:30 p.m. Saturday game against the District 6 runner-up at the Bridgeport location.

C-K plays at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Bridgeport against the District 8 runner-up.

Hurricane has a pool game at 1 p.m. Saturday on the Clarksburg field against the District 6 champion.

The single-elimination finals begin Tuesday.

10-11 BASEBALL: District 1 champion Ceredo-Kenova and runner-up Vinson along with District 3 champion Hurricane are among 10 teams advancing to the Little League Baseball 10-11 year-old state tournament that begins July 25 on the League 3 and Barboursville fields.

C-K plays its first pool play game July 25 (8 p.m.) at League 3 against the District 6 runner-up.

Vinson meets District 3 runner-up St. Albans in a July 26 (4:30 p.m.) contest at Barboursville.

Hurricane faces the District 6 champion July 26 (2 p.m.) at Barboursville.

The single-elimination finals are set to get underway July 28.

11-12 SOFTBALL: Wayne finished 3-0 in pool play in the Little League Softball 11-12 state tournament at Moorefield.

Jessica Watts pitched a perfect game in a defeat of Salem. Jessica Roe was the winner of two games, including a no-hitter against Keyser.

13-14 BASEBALL: District 1 champion Barboursville and runner-up Huntington Blue begin play Friday in the Little League Baseball 13-14 year-old Junior League state tournament.

The 13-team all-star team tournament with games at Barboursville Community Park and Cabell Midland High School also includes District 3 runner-up South Putnam.

Pool play begins Friday. Two teams with the best records from each of the four pools advance to the single-elimination finals that begin Monday.

9-10 BASEBALL: Ceredo-Kenova's run in the Little League Baseball 9-10 year-old state tournament at Logan ended Tuesday. Moorefield downed C-K, 8-3, in a quarterfinal game at Paul Hale Field.

The C-K team was 3-0 in pool play games, winning by a combined 53-6.

OHIO LITTLE LEAGUE: Ohio Little League Baseball state tournament play for 11-12 year-olds begins Saturday at South Point. The tournament will have 10 teams.

9-10 SOFTBALL: District 1 representatives Barboursville (champion) and Wayne (runner-up) are in the Little League Softball 9-10 year-old state tournament that begins Saturday in Summersville.
