HURRICANE, W.Va. -- With more than 130 participants, the turnout was tops at the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce annual golf tournament held at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club.
Jaye Ike, Chamber Project Director, said the event is the Chamber's biggest fundraiser second to their annual dinner, and thanks to all the participants and business donors throughout the community, it was quite a hit with more than $10,000 raised.
"Our golf tournament was a smashing success. We are so pleased with how it turned out, how many area businesses really came through for us, and supported our cause. We are so fortunate to have the support of these fine individuals and companies. Everyone seemed to have a great time, and we can't wait to do it all again next year."
Scoring 15 under par, the four-man team from ASI Business Solutions won first place with Mike Ferrell, Mike Griffith, Mike Lanksford and Alex Nagy each receiving a trophy from A Touch of Glass along with a $150 gift certificate from Sleepy's Pro Shop. This is ASI's second year winning the event.
Skill competitions included longest men's drive, longest women's drive, closest to the pin, longest putt and longest drive closest to water without going into the lake. Saturn of Charleston/Huntington and Courts Motors, both of Hurricane, were prepared to give away vehicles for a hole-in-one on designated greens, but no one was able to make the cut.
Participants were eligible for door prizes including golf packages to Canaan Valley Resort, Pipestem Resort, Pete Dye Golf Club, The Resort at Glade Springs and Stonewall Resort, a men's Citizen watch from Calvin Broyles Jewelers, a $100 gift certificate to Savannah's Restaurant in Huntington and a family four-pack to Camden Park, just to name a few. More than 60 area businesses donated door prizes or other items. "It was our best selection of prizes we've ever been able to offer," Ike said.
Breakfast items were provided by Tudor's and Tim Horton's, and Toyota sponsored dinner at Sleepy following the tournament.
Have you ever wondered, what is a Chamber of Commerce? Here's what the Chamber's event press release says.
"We are your voice in Putnam County representing you on state and local regulations and decisions that affect your business. We can save you time and provide information we have available to make your business operate more efficiently. The Chamber is a private, independent non-profit organization supported entirely by its members. It is not a governmental agency and does not receive outside funding. It is not a donation to a charity, but a good business investment -- 97 percent of the dues are tax deductible as a business expense."
The Chamber notes that approximately 500 members currently benefit from being a part of the organization. These benefits include promotion of Putnam County and its businesses, inclusion in a membership directory distributed to Chamber members, Realtors/newcomers, Putnam/Kanawha Welcome Agency, Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other high traffic areas such as libraries, banks, and the school board office, business referrals to Chamber members and the general public, ribbon cuttings, groundbreaking and grand opening celebrations, business input into government, representation through lobbying efforts, representation for members at local governmental meetings, and representation to boards completed by the Chamber president to broaden the awareness of key issues while providing the ability to keep members informed.
Other benefits and services include being provided with one-on-one business counseling and business start-up workshops on a monthly basis through the West Virginia Small Business Development Center from Charleston, and access to resources with the state and national Chamber of Commerce, among other things.
New members are always welcome to join the Chamber. If you are interested in becoming a new member, contact Teresa Catanzarite, Membership Director, at 304-757-6510 or online at tlcatanzarite@putnamcounty.org.
