Wheelersburg begins state play

SOUTH POINT, Ohio -- Wheelersburg is the District 11 entry in the Ohio Little League Baseball 11-12 year-old state tournament.

The 10-team, double-elimination tournament begins today at South Point Little League.

Wheelersburg plays at 1 p.m. today against Mount Vernon.

All-stars on the Wheelersburg squad are Brent Acree, Tristan Browning, Garrett Carmichael, Tyler Jenkins, Nathan Jones, Nick Marshall, Austin May, Eddie Miller, Cameron Parsely, Samuel Robinson, Jacob Roe and Zachary Russell. Roger Carmichael is the manager and Bruce Parsely the coach.

Other teams playing are Bellvue, Avon, Canfield, Hardscrabble (Clayton), Maumee, Ashtabula, Dover and Hamilton.

Driving directions to South Point Little League are U.S. 52 west from Chesapeake to the Delta Lane intersection then south on Delta Lane to County Road 1. Turn left on County Road 1 and the fields are about one-half mile on the right.

10 a.m., Bellevue vs. Avon

1 p.m., Wheelersburg vs. Mount Vernon

4 p.m., Canfield vs. Hardscrabble

7 p.m., Dover vs. Hamilton

BARBOURSVILLE SOFTBALL

Host team Moorefield defeated Barboursville, 4-2, in the semifinal game of the West Virginia Little League Softball 11-12 year-old state tournament.

Players on the team included Taylor Adkins, Mackenzie Allen, Mac Cassidy, Haley Curry, Alex Ellis, Casey Ellis, Mandi King, Alyssa Koontz, Alyssa Morris, Maddie Nease, Makayla Waugh, Brittany Weaver and Shea White. The coaches were Dell Adkins, Bob Morris and Todd White

In the semifinal game Adkins had a bunt single in the third inning that scored one run. Waugh's triple knocked in one more run.

Morris allowed only four hits, but took the loss.

Barboursville beat Shady Spring, 7-2, in its first championship bracket game.

Morris and King both had two hits and scored two runs each. Waugh was the winning pitcher.

The Barboursville all-stars went 1-1 in pool play, losing to Shady Spring (12-3) and beating Cross Lanes/Nitro (5-4).
