HUNTINGTON -- Southeastern of Huntington won the Babe Ruth Baseball 13-year-old state tournament championship.
Southeastern's tournament triumph in Glenville, W.Va., earns a berth in the Ohio Valley Regional beginning July 31 in Dodgeville, Wisc. The Southeastern team plays its opening game Aug. 1 against the Western Kentucky representative.
Team members are Tyler Hayes, Niles Dailey, Chris Cox, Ben Vance, Mark Shaver, Austin Woodall, Jacob York, Taylor Lewis, Chris Hatten, Johnny Swann, Zach Spurlock and Eddie Sowards.
Manager Jeff Dailey's staff includes coach Kevin Spurlock.
Southeastern downed Harrison County National in the state championship game, 9-1. Hayes allowed only two hits and recorded 11 strikeouts. Hatten picked up a save. Hayes also had a triple.
Hayes pitched a five-inning no-hitter in a 14-0 victory against Lewis County. He also had a pair of triples.
Spurlock was the winning pitcher in a 12-11, 10 inning defeat of Harrison County National.
Southeastern is conducting some fund-raisers to help with travel costs. The team has a July 28 event at Golden Corral from 4 to 8 p.m. with players serving. Tickets are $10.
