If you want to tell it like it is, Betty Brandon owns the Kanawha Valley Women's Golf Tournament.
Brandon, who lives in Hurricane and is a member at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, made it nine straight Kanawha Valley titles on Thursday when she shot 73 at Edgewood Country Club for a 54-hole total of 225. Her victory margin -- 25 shots. Brandon opened with a 73 on her home course and added a 77 at Big Bend.
The next big event for Brandon is the West Virginia Women's Amateur scheduled July 29-21 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels.
SNEAD FESTIVAL: The 15th Sam Snead Festival wrapped up Thursday at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. The tournament honors the legendary pro who called The Greenbrier home for more than 60 years. The festival had 140 players who played a round each on the Greenbrier, Old White and Meadows courses. Teams had a pro and four amateurs.
Roger Rowland, retired pro from Ocala, Fla., won the pro division. Low gross went to Kent Stauffer, pro from Charlotte, N.C., and Doug Annibale, Anne Thomas, Duke Thomas and Steve Thomas. Berry Hills pro led the low net team. His partners were Larry Lafon, Randy Payne, John Vargo and Mike Francis.
On Sept. 7-10, the Tom Watson Fall Classic will be held at The Greenbrier. During the event, players will get interact and learn from Watson, the golf pro emeritus for The Greenbrier, a position previously held by Snead.
REMEMBER HER: Does the name Cheyenne Woods ring a bell? It should. The niece of PGA Tour star Tiger Woods finished second in the Girls Division in the 2007 National Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior at Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland. In October, Woods was medalist for the second straight year in the 5A class in the Arizona State Tournament. Her team, Xavier Prep in Tucson, took home the team championship for the 10th straight year. She was named 2007 Golf of the Year by the Arizona Republic. She's going to play college golf at Wake Forest.
ONE SHORT: Charleston's Matt Hicks missed qualifying for the 64-player match play field at the U.S. Amateur Public Links golf championship Tuesday by one shot. The former Sissonville High and West Liberty College player shot 6-over-par 148 in the 36-hole qualifier at Murphy Creek Golf Club in Aurora, Colo. Ten players tied at 147 and one moved on via playoff.
DONE AFTER TWO: Ironton's Tony Brown and Jeff Kerns missed the cut in the Ohio Men's Amateur held at Findlay Country Club (6,714 yards, par 72). Brown shot 73-84 for 157 and Kerns had 77-84 for 161. The cut was 152.
TWO TO GO: Two events remain on the 2008 Tri-State Junior Golf Tour -- Friday at Guyan and July 28 at Portsmouth Elks.
