July 22, 2008 @ 06:40 AM

ONA -- Coming into the Little League Baseball 13-14 year-old Junior League state tournament Huntington Blue wasn't considered among the favored teams. But, fast forward to the fourth day of the tournament and the Big Blue is standing tall.

Monday night in the quarterfinals, Huntington Blue used the momentum it has created to establish a big lead early and hold on for an 11-9 win over Chapmanville.

Huntington Blue advances to the semifinals today at the Cabell Midland field where it will face Charleston at 8 p.m. with a trip to the state championship on the line. Charleston crushed Morgan County, 20-6, to advance to the semifinals.

Barboursville also played Monday. The District 1 champion ripped through Fairmont, 21-1, in the quarterfinals.

The Barboursville team will face South Putnam, an 11-1 winner over Summersville at 5 p.m. today.

Huntington Blue set the tone early in its matchup with Chapmanville, with Kaleb Frye making major contact in the top of the second inning for a double with the bases loaded to bring all three runners home. Huntington Blue held a 6-2 lead after the second inning.

But the Big Blue had plenty of runs in its storage tank and didn't let off the gas. Anthony Brunetti smacked a single in the top of the third inning to score two runs.

Huntington Blue scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined to blow the game open with an 11-1 lead. Luke Adkins smoked a triple to knock in a run.

Brunetti and James Webb led Huntington Blue's charge at the plate by hitting 3-for-4.

Barboursville also wasted little time in blowing its opponent out of the water. The team built a 13-1 lead after four innings and finished the game by pounding out eight runs in the fifth inning.

Adam Jeffrey and Caleb Ross shined bright in the win by hitting grand slam home runs to give their team a sizable lead in a game that quickly developed into a blowout.

Ross led the team in batting once again, hitting 4-for-5 with six RBIs. Wesley Wright was also sharp, hitting a perfect 3-for-3.
