Barboursville wins, Huntington Blue falls in Junior League tourney
ONA -- Throughout the Little League Baseball 13-14 year-old Junior League state tournament Barboursville's offense has been hitting the ball all over the park. But Tuesday night, it was pitching and defense that shut down South Putnam and helped Barboursville earn a 4-0 win.
Charleston eliminated Huntington Blue, 13-2, in the other semifinal game.
Barboursville and Charleston will meet at 5 p.m. today for the state championship at Barboursville Community Park.
South Putnam and Barboursville were locked in a scoreless tie for three innings.
Caleb Ross pitched four innings for Barboursville, allowing two hits and four walks before reaching his pitch count. But. Barboursville relief pitcher Adam Jeffrey also shined.
Jeffrey struck out the first four batters he faced in the fifth and six innings. Jeffrey didn't allow any hits in three innings, denying all 11 batters he faced the chance to get a hit.
"I knew I had the team behind me and I just came out here with a good feeling," Jeffrey said. "My arm felt good and I just built more confidence with each batter I faced."
Jeffrey was on from the first pitch to the last. His accuracy was the type of effort the Barboursville coaching staff was looking for.
"We have very good defense and there is no question about that," Barboursville coach Todd Lester said. "Adam came out here in relief and completely shut them down."
Barboursville scored the game's first run in the fourth inning when Austin Allen hit a sacrifice fly to bring Jacob Wolfe home. Shannon Skaggs stole home for a 2-0 lead.
The final two runs were scored in the sixth inning. Kyle Ash hit a single to drive in Jacob Sowards and Caleb Ross smacked a single to score Ash.
Huntington Blue started off with a bang in its game with Charleston, as Luke Adkins hit a homer in the first inning to bring around Cameron Roam for a 2-0 lead. But, after that it was all Charleston.
Charleston came out swinging, reeling off 15 hits to make quick work of Huntington Blue. In the fourth inning Charleston had six straight hits and Huntington pitcher Anthony Brunetti was taken out of the game.
Alex Levitan, Daniel Ramsey, and Jacob Good hit triples in the inning to ignite the scoring explosion. Levitan led Charleston, hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs.
Levitan was also the winning pitcher, giving up just two hits and four walks.
MEMORABLE DAY: Luke Adkins for Huntington Blue put on a hitting display Monday in a pool play game.
Huntington Blue belted Chapmanville, 22-0, with Adkins smacking two home runs and picking up 7 RBIs all in the first inning. One of the Adkins homers was a grand slam.
Cameron Roam also homered.
