Camp teaches about hoops and life
SPRING VALLEY -- Kids at the Timberwolf Basketball Camp don't just walk away as better players, they also become better people.
Steve Morrison, the Spring Valley High School boys basketball head coach, conducted the camp this week for boys and girls age 7 to 14. The focus was on basketball fundamentals and teaching life lessons.
"We emphasize self-discipline, work ethic, being a good person and being a good student," Morrison said . "It's the same things that we stress in our program here at Spring Valley."
Camp was broken down into four stations for ball handling, shooting, rebounding and defense. Campers also were taught about getting out on the fast break and how to communicate with teammates.
Austin Keyser took a timeout from shooting Thursday to explain why he enjoyed the camp. It was the fifth consecutive summer he attended.
"I'm just having a lot of fun learning more about the game of basketball and making new friends," said Keyser, 12. "I have really improved my defense this time around."
Morrison said the coaches make the camp fun. They even select a camper of the day for each age group.
After players worked through the basic fundamental stations, they broke up into age groups to play in controlled scrimmages.
"Coaches break down what each player needs to work on and it helps because there is a lot of individual instruction at this game," Morrison said. "What the campers learn this week, they need to continue to work on individually in their own time in order to improve."
In just a few short years, Keyser can use his camp knowledge as a Spring Valley player.
