Huntington Prep routs Rio Grande's JV team
BARBOURSVILLE -- 'Oops, two-hand throw-downs and, just for good measure, traditional one-handers.
Big plays and big dunks were aplenty for the nationally-ranked Huntington Prep Express on Thursday as it rolled to an 128-57 win over Rio Grande's junior varsity before a good crowd at Barboursville Middle School.
Already in control after a 63-34 first half lead, the Express turned up its defensive pressure even more in the third quarter, forcing several Red Storm turnovers and turning them into highlights at the other end.
Among them, was a Xavier Rathan-Mayes alley-oop to Evan Payne and pair of rim-rattling, glass-threatening slams from 6-foot-8, 215-pound Elijah Macon.
Prep (2-0), took the third period, 41-10.
Rathan-Mayes led all scorers with 26, Payne had 24 and Andrew Wiggins added 16.
Missouri commitment Stefan Jankovic poured in 15, including an NBA range 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Former Ironton standout Travis Elliott scored eight points points for Rio Grande.
