Ona/Hite-Saunders posts regional win
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — A 10-run first inning propelled Ona/Hite-Saunders past Sylacauga (Ala.) in a Thursday pool game of the Little League Softball (age 11-12) All-Star Southeastern Regional.
Ona/Hite-Saunders began its tournament run with an 18-1 victory at Southeast Park. The early lead and 16 runs in the first three innings helped the West Virginia champion put the game away early.
A fielder's choice, an error, an RBI single by Peyton Black, an RBI single by Charlee Mullins, a two-run single by Sydney Chapman, a wild pitch and a two-run single by Rianna Kingery in the first inning helped Ona/Hite Saunders put some runs on the board early.
Kingery, the first of three Ona/Hite-Saunders pitchers, held Sylacauga hitless in the first two innings, walked none and struck out five. Kingery got the win with relief help from Mullins and Laynee Farley.
Sylacauga, the Alabama champion, had only one hit in the game — a single by Elizabeth Hickey.
Jessica Darling had a short outing in the pitching circle for Sylacauga, lasting just two innings.
Chapman, Kingery and Hannah Toppins each contributed two hits to the Ona/Hite-Saunders total of nine. Kingery had three RBIs, Chapman had a triple and two RBIs and Toppins had a double and drove in one run.
Grace Brumfield, Peyton Black and Mullins all added hits.
Other Ona/Hite-Saunders runs were driven in by Kirya Kingery, Rebecca Hall, Black, Mullins, Thailei Bruton and Farley.
Ona/Hite-Saunders continues in pool play Friday at 10 a.m. against McLean (Va.) and Saturday at 1 p.m. against Morristown (Tenn.).
