Jul. 25, 2013 @ 06:21 PM

HUNTINGTON — Taylor Strickland played volleyball for Marshall University and now she’s helping coach the Thundering Herd.

Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs announced Strickland’s hiring as an assistant coach.

“It’s with great pride that Taylor has accepted an assistant coaching position with us,” Jacobs said. “To have someone grow up in our club, play at Marshall and also have an outstanding high school and club coaching resume right here in our backyard is special.

“I look forward to beginning the next chapter in Marshall volleyball, and I can’t wait until Aug. 9 when we hit the court in preseason.”

Strickland played on two Marshall teams, including the 2007 Conference USA regular season championship squad.

The Spring Valley High School graduate has been an assistant coach at the school for five seasons. The Timberwolves won Class AAA state titles in 2009 and 2011.

Strickland also works with the River Cities Thunder Volleyball Club, of which Jacobs is the training director. She coached the age 13-Under team from 2010-12 before moving to the age 18-Under team. Earler this year the 18-Under team finished 33rd in the National Division and 64th of 150 teams at the USA Junior National Championships in Dallas.

She has also worked as a graduate assistant from 2011-13 for the M Club for former Marshall athletic team members.

“I am very excited to start my collegiate coaching career at not only my alma mater but the school I grew up around,” Strickland said. “I can honestly say I bleed green and will represent this university proudly.

“I cannot thank Mitch enough for giving me this opportunity. Coaching at Marshall University has been a dream of mine for many years and I am looking forward to starting this season in August to build on a program that is already known for its success.”

Jacobs also announced the addition of Matt Jackson as a graduate assistant coach.

Jackson, a native of Pleasanton, Calif., played volleyball at Amador Valley High School, and then was captain of the men’s club team at Oregon State University and student manager with the OSU women’s intercollegiate team. He also coached the OSU men for one year. He is a 2012 Oregon State graduate.
