Fairland, Ironton runners reach Ohio state meet in cross country
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Fairland's Joe Stewart finished 14th overall in the Ohio Division II Region 7 cross country championships on Saturday at Pickerington High School.
Stewart's time for the 5K race was 18:27.39 and that landed him a spot in the state meet on Saturday at Scioto Downs in Columbus. The top four teams and top 16 individuals in the regionals qualify for the state.
The Division II boys race starts at 2:05 p.m.
Fairland's team finished fifth, missing fourth and a trip to the state by eight points.
Other Fairland runners who scored were Raine Wireman, 25th; Wayne Moore, 30th; Garrett Wireman, 55th; Zack Fannin, 61st. Ryan Stewart and Logan Rowe rounded out the young Fairland squad. The Dragons have three freshmen and a sophomore in the top seven.
Fairland's girls team placed 14th in Region 11 of Division III with 247 points. Freshman Megan Ashton led the Dragons, placing 45th in 22:43.48. Tori Hutchison, Carrie Tanner, Kennon Clarkson, Mariah Chaffin, Carmen Webb and Grace Skiles rounded out the Fairland team.
Ironton's Taylor Hacker competed as an individual and placed 15th overall with a time of 21:20.55. That gets her a trip to the state meet. Starting time for Division III girls is 11:05 a.m.
Peyton Adkins and Mckenna Warner of Gallipolis qualified for the state in Division II. That race begins at 11:50 a.m.
