Cox leads Ironton to victory over Russell

IRONTON — Tristan Cox scored four touchdowns to lead Ironton to a 35-14 victory over Russell on Friday night at Tanks Memorial Stadium.

On offense, Cox had scoring runs of 68 and 1 yards and he hooked up with Lucas Camp­bell on a 47-yard TD pass. As a safety, Cox returned an inter­ception 60 yards for a TD with 2:51 left in the third quarter to put the Fighting Tigers ahead to stay, 21-14.

Ironton (1-1) extended its winning streak in the series to 16 and overall series lead to 25-3-1. The Red Devils last won in 1977.

Russell (1-1) took advantage of a long punt return and inter­ception return for its first two scores. Ethan Thompson had a 75-yard punt return to the Ironton 9 in the second period and Nick Conley scored on a 9-yard run. In the third period, Cox had a pass picked off and the Red Devils brought it back to the home team’s 1. Conley went over on the first play and ran for two to tie the game at 14-14 with 6:54 left.

Ironton is back home next Friday against Amanda Clear­creek. Russell is also home next Friday against Ashland.

The 1-yard TD run by Cox late in the fourth period capped an 11-play, 48-yard drive. Derik Berry’s 3-yard TD run with 27 seconds left capped the scoring for the Fighting Tigers.

Cox led Ironton’s rushers with 12 carries for 125 yards. The Fighting Tigers had 351 total yards and limited the Red Devils to 126.
