Cabell Midland spoils Hurricane's Senior Night with 24-7 win

November 07, 2009 @ 12:45 AM

HURRICANE -- Quarterback Michael Brumfield threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead Cabell Midland past Hurricane, 24-7, in the regular-season finale for both teams Friday night at Redskins Stadium.

For the Knights, they salvaged a 5-5 season while spoiling Senior Night at Hurricane and ending the Class AAA playoff hopes for the Redskins (5-5).

"I'm extremely happy for our senior group," Knights coach Chip McMillian said. "We deserved better. We overcame injuries and illness. With big No. 1 (Brumfield) in the pocket, he stepped up and led us. This sets the tone for next year. This was our playoff game. The guys stepped up."

Brumfield's TD passes covered 36 yards to Evan Shoemaker and 23 to Tyler Sanson. Shoemaker beat double coverage and went high to latch on to the TD pass with 2:58 left in the first period. Sanson managed to keep one foot in bounds as he hauled in TD pass No.2 to give the Knights an 18-7 lead with 1:01 left in the second period.

"I settled down on my route. I looked down and made sure my foot was in," Sanson said. "I couldn't believe it. It was our most complete game of the year."

"Unbelievable catch. I don't know how he did it," Brumfield said of Sanson.

On Shoemaker's TD grab, Brumfield said, "he made a great play. He just went up and got the ball."

Cabell Midland's defense contained the Hurricane attack nearly all night. The Redskins went 63 yards in 10 plays to get their only TD. It came when Trey Rennick fell on a Tyler Pate's fumble in the end zone with 7:53 left in the second period. Pate carried to the 5 on the play, got hit, the ball rolled into the end zone and Rennick pounced on it there. Other than that break, the Redskins either went 3-and-out or 2-and-out on all series in the entire first half.

"The defense had a good plan and made the plays," McMillian said.

Two plays into the fourth period, Brumfield scored on a 1-yard sneak to cap an 16-play, 63-yard drive.

"Physically I thought we were a little stronger," McMillian said. "We wore them down. When you have to throw, you can go after them."

Maxey and Sanson said this was a great way to end the season.

"I'm close to some of the guys who go to Hurricane," Sanson said. "I know they're hurting."

"Best feeling we've had all year," Maxey said. "This will give us a lot of momentum for next year."

On the ground, Maxey had Cabell Midland's biggest play. He broke a tackle at the line, found daylight up the middle and sprinted 64 yards for a TD with 28 seconds left in the first period. He finished with 103.

"I thought I was going down ," he said. "I spun out of there and took off."

Brumfield finished 14 of 26 for 178 yards. He did have two picked off.

"We have a rivalry," Brumfield said. "This feels great. We had some battles. What a great way to end the year and my career. We knew we were a playoff team. To end like this makes it a little better. We had the motivation and the juniors and rest of the guys should have it next year."
