Walsh: Colonial Lanes wraps up season with Tournament of Champions

November 22, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

Another in-house tournament season is about to end at Colonial Lanes. Dave Black runs scratch and handicap events throughout the year and wraps things up with the Tournament of Champions.

The tournaments attract quite a few local bowlers. The popularity has led to bowlers driving in from as far away as Paintsville, Ky., Nicholasville, Ky., and Portsmouth, Ohio, to name a few cities.

For the scratch division, the T of C is at 2 p.m., Sunday. The oil pattern will be the USBC Masters. Entry fee is $40.

One outsider who's made his presence felt is Matt Maynard of Paintsville. Earlier this season, Maynard, 21, led the qualifier on the same pattern, but lost to Gary Belcher in the title match. Maynard did get a win on the Viper pattern on Sept. 27.

"I try not to miss one. You don't get things like this at home," Maynard said. "I like competing on the different shots. None of the oil patterns are easy."

Maynard, a right-hander, has enjoyed some big moments at the 12-lane Spare Time bowling center in Paintsville. He reeled off games of 258, 268 and 277 for an 803 on Nov. 3. It's the first 800 ever at that center. He rolled his second perfect game on Oct. 6 and got his first last year. They're the only 300s in house history.

"I was tickled," said Maynard, who has a 217 average in the Tuesday Men's League . "It means a lot to be the first to do something."

Before the scoring explosion, Maynard's career bests were 299 for game (he left a 7-pin on the final shot) and 794 for series.

Jeff Wiseman won two events and led the scratch division in points with 945. Maynard was No. 2 with 875. Two-time winner Matt Joyce was third with 760. Brian Fite, who placed second three times, and Sam Nowalk tied for fourth with 610 each.

On the amateur side, Linda Smoot led in points with 720. She had win during the year. Ed Bleyle, who won Sunday's no-tap handicap tournament for his second win of the season, shares second with Kim Boyd. Both have 660 point. Boyd also had a win.

The T of C for the handicap division will be held Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. Entry fee is $30.

When season seven begins in January 2010, there will be an increase in entry fees. This increase is not only for lineage and expenses, but will add to the prize funds.

Breakdowns are: Singles, $25. Doubles, $30. Scratch, $30.

FINAL DAY: The Huntington USBC Women's Championship Tournament ends Sunday at Ceredo Lanes. Doubles and singles are on tap.

PAGE, JOHNSON WIN: Sporting a shaved head in support of a friend undergoing cancer treatment, and playing a style of game outside his normal comfort zone, Rhino Page piled up more strikes than Ryan Ciminelli to win the PBA Tour's Viper Championship last Sunday. Page fired a 268 to 246 for Ciminelli to get his third career win. As part of the PBA World Series of Bowling finals, Liz Johnson defeated Lynda Barnes, 211-196, for the women's Viper Championship.

A week ago, Ciminelli switched from reactive resin to urethane equipment and made the finals in the Cheetah Championship where he lost to Norm Duke. Page made a similar move Sunday and the switch paid off. Ciminelli struck on seven of his first eight shots before leaving three consecutive 7 pins that ultimately made the difference because Page struck on nine of his first 10 attempts. In the semifinals, Page beat Steve Jaros, 221-180, and Ciminelli struck twice in the 10th to eliminate Michael Haugen Jr., 238-236.
