MU Women's Notebook: Defense sparking revival

January 13, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Jan. 10 has become a big date in Marshall University women's basketball history.

On that date in 2008, the Marshall women's basketball team went on the road to Elma Roane Fieldhouse and defeated Memphis, 61-47, marking the lowest point total ever allowed in Conference USA play.

The Thundering Herd trumped that effort Saturday by going to Tulsa's Reynolds Center and limiting the Golden Hurricane to just 37 points in a 51-37 victory.

The defensive effort had several superlatives. Here are a few:

Fewest points allowed by Marshall since an 88-34 victory over Morgan State to open the 2003-04 season.

n Fewest points given up in a Marshall regular season conference game since defeating Western Carolina 52-36 on Feb. 20, 1988. At that time, only one Marshall player (senior guard Casey Baker) had celebrated their first birthday.

n Tulsa had only three assists in the contest. Records were not found to show a Marshall game in history where an opponent had fewer assists. Marshall's Chantelle Handy had four assists alone on Saturday.

To keep the trend going, Marshall has played 18 contests in history on the date Jan. 10, coming away with 10 wins in the process.

In those 10 victories, Marshall has allowed an average of just 49.6 points per game while holding opponents under 40 on four occasions.

GOOD LUCK CHARM: A degree from the University of Texas might have to wait for Kasi Chadwick.

The daughter of Marshall women's basketball coach Royce Chadwick has been somewhat of a good-luck charm for the Thundering Herd.

The Chadwicks met up in Dallas to watch this weekend's games and the Herd came away 2-0. Royce Chadwick said it went the same last season also.

With the pending matchup against West Virginia -- a team that the Thundering Herd has lost six of seven games to in Chadwick's era -- Kasi will be joining her father in Charleston on Wednesday.

"Any time Kasi comes to watch this team, we have won," father Chadwick said. "Needless to say, she's coming back to West Virginia to visit me this week."

GLASS CLEANERS: In the last two games, Marshall has an even 100 rebounds with 46 coming on the offensive end.

In Thursday's 70-63 win over SMU, the Herd grabbed 22 offensive rebounds and finished with 51 for the game. On Saturday, Marshall grabbed 24 offensive rebounds and finished with 49 for the game.

BIRTHDAYS: This week, two members of the Herd will celebrate birthdays. Forward Keona Brooks will turn 21 on Tuesday while guard Rashedah Henriques will celebrate No. 19 on Saturday.
